PROGRAMME FOR THE SECOND STUDY TRIP TO UPPSALA.

Dear HUMANE Member,

After successful study trips by heads of university management and administration to Helsinki, Utrecht, Heidelberg, Warwick and Uppsala, we  had the eighth HUMANE intensive study trip, again to Uppsala University - a leading university in Europe. As the first trip to Uppsala was full booked and the subsequent evaluation of our visit was very positive, we decided to organise a repeat.

Uppsala University ( Swedish: Uppsala universitet) is a research  university in  Uppsala,  Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in  Scandinavia and has been one of Europe's most renowned seats of learning for centuries. Uppsala University consistently ranks among the best universities in  Northern Europe in international rankings and is one of the most prestigious universities in Europe, with a strong strategic focus on quality and sustainability. An analysis of this strategy, its implementation and the critical factors affecting it will certainly prove useful and rewarding to you and your colleagues individually and to your institution.

The programme started on the evening of Tuesday 7 February 2012 and ended on Friday night 10 February 2012.

The programme is still attached. Within short notice there will be a written report of the organizers, which can be found in the right column to this page.

The programme concluded with a formal dinner on Friday evening, where certificates confirming participation were distributed.

Format

Group participation creates the best results, both in terms of the content of the discussions and of the learning experiences of the participants.  We therefore suggest that  universities' collaborators do not attend as an individual but with a small group of colleagues (approximately three people per participating university). It is preferable for the head of administration to be present but this is not essential, particularly where you have attended a previous study trip.

Please also make sure that everyone you nominate is able to understand the English presentations and participate in the discussions, which will also be in English.

Costs

The fee for the study trip is € 1,900 per participant. The fee for representatives of non-member universities is € 2,250.  The fee includes all meals (lunches and dinners) but not travel and accommodation.

Hotel

You are expected to make your own hotel reservations. Participants will receive advice on an appropriate hotel and instructions for hotel bookings when they have registered.

Registration

We had to disappoint some subscribers on previous occasions so we strongly advise you to register as soon as possible. A registration form is available at www.humane.eu. Due to the limited spaces on the Study Trip your registration will be binding. If you cancel your registration before 15 December 2011 we will reimburse 75% of the fee. No reimbursement can be made after that date.

NB: The number of participants will be limited (approximately 21 per trip). Please advise intending participants to wait for confirmation of registration before making any travel arrangements.

We believe that study visits are of great benefit and add greatly to the services we offer our members. HUMANE continues carefully to evaluate these visits in terms of their effectiveness and relevance, and each visit is informed by the evaluations made of the previous study trip.

Having participated myself in the first Uppsala study trip, I can confirm that it is valuable, interesting, very intensive (please do not let anyone come with a view that they will, within the programme, have the opportunity for sightseeing – although they are of course free to extend their stay if they want to do so) and a fascinating opportunity to see how not only Uppsala but a range of participating universities deal with common issues.

Please do not hesitate to contact Anton Nijssen ( ajnijssen(at)wxs.nl) or myself (jhopkinson@plymouth.ac.uk) if you require any further information.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Hopkinson

Study Trip leader (former delegate of UK in HUMANE Executive Committee)
